Tour Our Roaster

OPERATION

Syd and Jerry’s Table Top Commercial Coffee Roaster is quick and easy to use. It’s design and unique microprocessor control allows almost anyone, with minimal training, to roast the freshest coffee possible. It only takes two minutes or less of labor to roast one pound of fresh coffee beans. A simple step-by-step guide below shows you exactly how easy it is to operate.

The first step in using the Table-Top Commercial Coffee Roaster is to gently lift the lever on the left side of the machine, grasp the wooden handle on the roasting chamber, and remove the roasting chamber from the machine (as shown in Figure B below).

Set the roasting chamber on the table, and remove the chaff collector assembly from the top of the roasting chamber (See Figure C below).

Next, measure out one can of green coffee beans and pour the green coffee beans into the glass roasting chamber. Replace the chaff collector assembly back on top of the glass roasting chamber, gently raise the lever on the left side of the machine, and replace the roasting chamber and chaff collector into the roasting machine.

Now the machine is loaded. It is time to set the controls of the roaster. First, the gas valve on your propane tank or your natural gas line must be turned on.

Next, turn on both rocker switches. They are labeled "power" and "gas" (as shown in Figure D below).

It's now time to set the desired degree of roast. The roaster has an LED that, using the arrow keys located on the side of the machine, can be set from "0" to "9". This sets the darkness of the finished roast, from very light at "0" to very dark at "9". Because of our roaster's one-of-a-kind microprocessor, the entire roast and cool down cycle, once started, is precisely carried out automatically. It is an important fact that, with our roaster, the end point of the roast is controlled by temperature, rather than by a timer. Once the degree of roast number has been selected for a particular coffee bean type, the roaster will repeatedly roast to the same degree of darkness without human attention.

To begin the roasting cycle, push the "Start" button. The full cycle will take approximately 20 minutes. The roasting cycle, depending on the bean type, degree of roast, ambient temperature, and other conditions will typically be from eight to fourteen minutes. The microprocessor automatically monitors the roast rate and pulses the gas to maintain an optimal level of heat. The roasting cycle is automatically followed by a cooling cycle of seven minutes. Unlike most commercial roasters on the market that use an electric element, Syd and Jerry's roaster is gas-fired. This is important for two reasons. First, during the roast cycle, the gas is pulsed on and off by the microprocessor to insure a proper rate of roast. It allows precise adjustment of the roast profile to fit the type of bean and ambient environment. Second, once the roast cycle is complete, the low thermal mass of the burner system allows a very rapid cooling of the roasted coffee. This "quench" is important to the quality of the finished roast.

When the machine shuts itself off, empty out the cooled, freshly roasted coffee and brush out the chaff collector. You’re now ready to serve the freshest coffee available.
